TECH TALENT
Recife Technology Development Hub
A conversation with Sarah Yasmini, Software Development Analyst
July 31, 2024
As a global organization, we are committed to fostering talent across geographies. With technology development hubs around the world, Stellantis attracts top talent wherever it resides, bolstering the ingenuity and diversity it takes to keep up with innovation and lead the way the world moves.
In this “Tech Talent” series, we get one-on-ones with talented young leaders from our top hubs across the globe about how they are delivering on our software-driven strategy and bringing us closer to making Stellantis the best place to work in the automotive industry.
The Recife Technology Development Hub in Brazil is a global leader in producing software for engine control modules and transmissions that improve energy efficiency and fuel consumption while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Hub’s activities also encompass body electronics, virtual engineering and software quality.
Stellantis is set to launch its first innovative hybrid models equipped with all-new Bio-Hybrid technologies. The Recife Hub is spearheading the development of this key technology, which combines electrification with flex-fuel and ethanol engines, alongside the 100% battery-electric vehicles fully developed and produced by Stellantis in Brazil.
In a conversation with Sarah Yasmini, a young engineer and software development analyst at the Recife Hub, she shared why she chose this professional path and the important role the Hub plays in advancing women’s careers.
Can you tell us about your work at the Recife Technology Hub?
Sarah: This is an exciting job indeed. I normally work on several different projects at the same time, and I am glad that I can handle them all well, although it is challenging!
The work in propulsion systems is fantastic and really excites me, as I think about how we are developing today what we will deliver to our customers in the future. We are working on very disruptive ideas connected to electrification, aimed at maintaining Stellantis’ position as a leader in the industry and in sustainable mobility.
I have participated in some great projects, such as the turbo engines for the Jeep Compass and Renegade and the Fiat Fastback and Pulse, sold here in the South America region, as well as many other projects for the Middle East & Africa and North America regions.
Today, we are working on exciting projects for our future, especially the Bio-Hybrid, which is going to take Stellantis to the next level in our region and is aligned with our Value pillar, “We care for the future”. There is nothing more important than caring for the future of our planet and the next generations.
How did you get here? Tell us more about your career.
Sarah: In 2017, during my last semester studying electrical engineering, a friend told me that Stellantis, at that time FCA, was recruiting for its Recife Technology Development Hub. I was already familiar with the new Stellantis plant in Goiana, so discovering a Software Hub in Recife was a pleasant surprise. With my engineering background, joining Stellantis offered me the opportunity to work close to my hometown and build a career within the Company! After a rigorous hiring process, I was thrilled to start my journey here.
I vividly remember my early days at the Hub, which were truly inspiring due to the collaborative atmosphere. Our senior colleagues warmly welcomed us new hires and were always very supportive. They helped us understand how the propulsion area works, actively involving us in their projects to accelerate our learning curve.
Working with propulsion systems was particularly fulfilling for me. It demanded dedication from both me and my team, which I thrive on! It was an amazing and enriching experience as it allowed me to engage with global teams and learn new things every day.
Can you tell us why the Technology Development Hub in Recife is attractive for young, new talent?
Sarah: I think the Hub is an attractive place for top talent for several reasons but three things in particular stand out for me. First, we work with innovative technologies that directly contribute to the development of software for our exceptional vehicles. It’s immensely rewarding. Knowing that our work influences customer satisfaction gives us pride to say, “I was part of this project.”
Second, being a hybrid company, we have the flexibility to work from home, which enhances our work-life balance by reducing commuting time.
The third reason is that Porto Digital – the technology park where our Hub is located – is a vibrant tech hub with 400 companies and 18,000 employees, boasting a blend of historic charm and modern amenities. Working amidst such surroundings not only inspires creativity but also fosters collaborations with colleagues who share our passion.
Do you think this is a job that should attract more women?
Sarah: Absolutely. The perception that the automotive industry is exclusively for men is outdated. Women also have a passion for cars, technology and a fulfilling career, making this field a perfect fit for them.
Stellantis provides a supportive and inclusive environment, embracing the principles of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. It’s empowering to work in a place where I can be myself, focused on doing my best and learning from talented people.
We’re fortunate to have great women in leadership roles, such as our South America Software Director, Gisele Tonello, who is an inspiration for all of us.
Stellantis demonstrates its commitment to Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) through initiatives like “Women in Engineering” and “Women in Technology”, which have been highly successful. Stellantis is one of the pioneers in these programs and it makes me very proud that the Company is actively engaged in attracting and retaining women in engineering and technology roles.
Diversity fuels innovation and helps Stellantis maintain its leadership in South America which is a highly competitive market. It’s one of the many reasons why this Company is a great place to work and a fantastic place to build a career.
